Quantitative analysis of chemical components in the bark of several native and exotic species of Llanquihue, X Region, Chile

Abstract
Quantitative analysis of lignin and extractives in bark of some native and exotic species grown in ñadi soils in Llanquihue, X Region, Chile, were determined by using Tappi Test Methods (1994).
The percentage of lignin and extractives in some species were higher in bark than in wood. The high percentage of lignin obtained is attributed to suberine; a polymeric substance that is bound to the lignin in the bark.
The solubility values in ethanol-toluene and hot water indicate that the extractives are abundant in the bark. Thus making it (the bark) highly suitable in obtaining several chemical substances of economical interest.
