Abstract

Sirex noctilio Fabricius has been considered one of the most serius insects pest associated with species of the (Pinus) genus, among which. Pinus radiata exhibits a high susceptibility. The woodwasp is primarily an Eurasian insect that was introduced in Australia, New Zealand and Tasmania, causing great damage to Pinus forests. In South America, it is now present in Uruguay and Argentina. In Chile, this insect has not been detected, but considering the importance of the Pinus radiata plantations, it was considered convenient to present this biological and symptomatological review, to inform and create conscience about this potential pest. The biological cycle of S. noctilio is described. The factors that predispose the attack are: site, management, age, vigour of the trees and climatic conditions.
