Abstract

The phenotypic variation presented by Nothofagus antarctica was studied in different habitats in the provinces of Cautín, Valdivia and Osorno, in Southern Chile. Eleven plots were located, 3 at the Andes, 2 at the Central valley and 6 at the coastal mountain Range. A significant floristic and edaphic variation among places was verified. By using morphological and population features of the species and stand edaphic characteristics by means of cluster and factorial analysis, 3 morphotypes were established: an arboreal one, growing in optimal environment, a camephytic one of bog-lands and an intermediate morphotype wich represents a shrubby dwarf type.
