Territorial and intercultural conflicts in southwestern Colombia: the case of the Community Council of the black community of Citronela and the Indigenous Council of Nonandur

Abstract

This paper characterizes territorial and intercultural conflict between the Community Council of the black community of Citronela and the Cabildo Indígena de Nonandur, in Buenaventura Colombia. It contributes to identify how two communities that coexist in one territory come into conflict, managing it without resorting to violence. The actors recognize the right of each other to be holders of a portion of land, but they fail to consider a form of coexistence in which the two ethnic institutions are present. Likewise, it shows how the role of official bodies has increased the conflict before helping to mitigate it. Finally, this study contributes to the analysis of community experiences that allow conflicts to be managed peacefully.
