Abstract

The following article seeks to open the discussion concerning present and future demands due to changes in population growth pattern during the last decades. This way, possibilities and present tendencies to build a city are stated, recognizing advantages and disadvantages of current urban growth models. The urban "smart growth" appears as an alternative, promoting changes In the development traditional patterns through recognizing the challenges of contemporary cities within a metropolitan and regional vision of cooperation and an Interdisciplinary planning process.
