PHYTOPATHOGEN MOLLICUTES TRANSMITTED BY INSECTS: INTERACTIONS AND EFFECTS ON THEIR VECTORS
Main Article Content
Abstract
Phytopathogen mollicutes such as phytoplasmas and spiroplasmas are associated with multiple plant diseases which, in many cases, have economically important effects due to the losses they cause. Research in biology, ecology and phytoplasma/spiroplasma transmission have increased exponentially over the last 20 years, but little information is available regarding interactions and their effects on the transmitters of these pathogens. This review is intended to demonstrate the new advances in this area with up to date information that include relevant cases that have served as models for current studies. Although both spiroplasma and phytoplasma are covered, the information presented is biassed towards the latter, as they have recently been gaining more importance in the country.
