Abstract

A study to determine the effects of four growth-stage cutting systems of red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) over the accumulation of organic nitrogen reserves (ONR) in the basis of total N, was conducted in a split-plot experiment during three production periods (1968 - 1971) at the Carillanca Experiment Station, Agriculture Research Institute, Cautín, Chile. The accumulation of ONR in red clover was influenced by harvesting methods, date of the year and the interaction between both factors. It was highest in plant not harvested. The ONR fluctuated between 1.63% to 2.14% according to date of the year and harvesting system. Consideration such as the relation between forage yield and ONR are discussed.
